Discoloration of the skin on the feet may be a sign of poor circulation. Problems with circulation can be caused by many different conditions. Raynaud’s disease, a condition that can make the blood vessels in the hands and feet temporarily spasm and constrict, can restrict blood flow and make your feet turn blue, purple, red, or white. Lupus, an autoimmune disease, can cause an inflammation of the blood vessels called vasculitis, which can cause a rash of red or purple dots to appear on the skin. Peripheral artery disease, a condition characterized by poor blood flow to the lower extremities, can cause the feet to gradually turn purple or blue. Diabetes can have a similar effect on the feet. If you notice a discoloration in the skin of your feet, please see that you seek the care of a podiatrist.
Poor circulation is a serious condition and needs immediate medical attention. If you have any concerns with poor circulation in your feet contact Dr. Kevin F. Gallagher of Gallagher Podiatry. Our doctor will treat your foot and ankle needs.
Poor Circulation in the Feet

Causes
Lack of oxygen and oxygen from poor blood circulation restricts muscle growth and development. It can also cause:
Those who have diabetes or smoke are at greatest risk for poor circulation, as are those who are over 50. If you have poor circulation in the feet and legs it may be caused by PAD and is important to make changes to your lifestyle in order to reduce risk of getting a heart attack or stroke. Exercise and maintaining a healthy lifestyle will dramatically improve conditions.

The medical condition that causes the toes to bend downward may be referred to as hammertoe. The muscles and ligaments in the middle toes are generally affected, and can appear deformed. There are several reasons that may cause this ailment to develop. These can include having high arches, enduring a toe injury, genetics, and wearing shoes that do not fit correctly. Additionally, existing medical conditions like arthritis may gradually cause hammertoe to develop. Research has indicated that it may be difficult for the toes to straighten out when hammertoe exists, and this may be a result of wearing shoes that are extremely pointed. Many patients experience pain and discomfort with hammertoe, and it is suggested that you consult with a podiatrist as quickly as possible who can offer you the best treatment techniques.
Hammertoe
Hammertoes can be a painful condition to live with. For more information, contact Dr. Kevin F. Gallagher from Gallagher Podiatry. Our doctor will answer any of your foot- and ankle-related questions.
Hammertoe is a foot deformity that affects the joints of the second, third, fourth, or fifth toes of your feet. It is a painful foot condition in which these toes curl and arch up, which can often lead to pain when wearing footwear.
Symptoms
Causes
Genetics – People who are genetically predisposed to hammertoe are often more susceptible
Arthritis – Because arthritis affects the joints in your toes, further deformities stemming from arthritis can occur
Trauma – Direct trauma to the toes could potentially lead to hammertoe
Ill-fitting shoes – Undue pressure on the front of the toes from ill-fitting shoes can potentially lead to the development of hammertoe
Treatment
Orthotics – Custom made inserts can be used to help relieve pressure placed on the toes and therefore relieve some of the pain associated with it
Medications – Oral medications such as anti-inflammatories or NSAIDs could be used to treat the pain and inflammation hammertoes causes. Injections of corticosteroids are also sometimes used
Surgery – In more severe cases where the hammertoes have become more rigid, foot surgery is a potential option

Toenail fungus is a contagious fungal infection, and can spread from wearing an infected person’s shoes or socks, and possibly from sharing towels. Toenail fungus lives and thrives in warm and moist environments, such as public swimming pools, locker rooms, and surrounding areas. Common symptoms that are often associated with toenail fungus can include the affected nail becoming yellow, thick, and brittle. In severe cases, the nail may lift off of the nail bed, and a new nail will gradually grow underneath it. If you see the beginning stages of toenail fungus, please speak to a podiatrist as quickly as possible so that the proper treatment can begin.
If left untreated, toenail fungus may spread to other toenails, skin, or even fingernails. If you suspect you have toenail fungus it is important to seek treatment right away. For more information about treatment, contact Dr. Kevin F. Gallagher of Gallagher Podiatry. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.
Symptoms
Treatment
If self-care strategies and over-the-counter medications does not help your fungus, your podiatrist may give you a prescription drug instead. Even if you find relief from your toenail fungus symptoms, you may experience a repeat infection in the future.
Prevention
In order to prevent getting toenail fungus in the future, you should always make sure to wash your feet with soap and water. After washing, it is important to dry your feet thoroughly especially in between the toes. When trimming your toenails, be sure to trim straight across instead of in a rounded shape. It is crucial not to cover up discolored nails with nail polish because that will prevent your nail from being able to “breathe”.
In some cases, surgical procedure may be needed to remove the toenail fungus. Consult with your podiatrist about the best treatment options for your case of toenail fungus.

The medical condition that is known as gout can cause severe pain and difficulty walking. It generally affects the joints in the big toe, and may cause swelling and redness. It can develop as a result of excess uric acid in the bloodstream, which can occur for various reasons. These can include genetic factors, or from eating foods that have high levels of purines. Elevated levels of purines can be found in specific foods such as red meat, shellfish, and drinks that are made with large amounts of sugar. To determine the severity of gout, fluid is removed from the affected joints and observed for uric acid crystals. It is strongly recommended that a podiatrist be consulted if you are afflicted with gout.
Gout is a foot condition that requires certain treatment and care. If you are seeking treatment, contact Dr. Kevin F. Gallagher from Gallagher Podiatry. Our doctor will treat your foot and ankle needs.
What Is Gout?
Gout is a type of arthritis caused by a buildup of uric acid in the bloodstream. It often develops in the foot, especially the big toe area, although it can manifest in other parts of the body as well. Gout can make walking and standing very painful and is especially common in diabetics and the obese.
People typically get gout because of a poor diet. Genetic predisposition is also a factor. The children of parents who have had gout frequently have a chance of developing it themselves.
Gout can easily be identified by redness and inflammation of the big toe and the surrounding areas of the foot. Other symptoms include extreme fatigue, joint pain, and running high fevers. Sometimes corticosteroid drugs can be prescribed to treat gout, but the best way to combat this disease is to get more exercise and eat a better diet.
