Flat feet is a condition in which there is no visible arch in the feet when the feet bear weight. While all babies are born with flat feet, in most children, the arch will develop slowly over time. However, obese children have been found to be more likely to retain their flat feet. This can be due to lowered arches caused by the excess strain that being overweight places on the feet, in addition to the extra fat padding found on the soles of obese children’s feet. Flat feet sometimes cause foot and ankle pain and can also contribute to back pain as children age. If your child has flat feet and complains of foot pain, please consult with a podiatrist.
The more you weigh, the harder your feet must work to support your body. If you’re an obese individual and are concerned about your feet, contact Dr. Kevin F. Gallagher from Gallagher Podiatry. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Orthotics are specially designed shoe inserts that help correct imbalances and provide additional support to the feet. They can be purchased over the counter or be custom made by a podiatrist. Orthotics can help provide relief from a variety of conditions such as corns, calluses, ulcerations, tendonitis, heel pain, recurring stress fractures, and even hip and lower back pain. Since orthotics are designed to address specific problems, they can work in various ways that include relieving pressure by redistributing body weight or by providing extra shock absorption. Patients who believe that orthotics may help relieve their foot and ankle issues should consult with a podiatrist. A podiatrist looks at a variety of factors, such as the foot’s structure and function, biomechanics and lifestyle factors, to determine the right fit for each individual patient.
If you are having discomfort in your feet and would like to try orthotics, contact Dr. Kevin F. Gallagher from Gallagher Podiatry. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.
What Are Orthotics?
Orthotics are inserts you can place into your shoes to help with a variety of foot problems such as flat feet or foot pain. Orthotics provide relief and comfort for minor foot and heel pain but can’t correct serious biomechanical problems in your feet.
Over-the-Counter Inserts
Orthotics come in a wide variety of over-the-counter inserts that are used to treat foot pain, heel pain, and minor problems. For example, arch supports can be inserted into your shoes to help correct overarched or flat feet, while gel insoles are often used because they provide comfort and relief from foot and heel pain by alleviating pressure.
Prescription Orthotics
If over-the-counter inserts don’t work for you or if you have a more severe foot concern, it is possible to have your podiatrist prescribe custom orthotics. These high-quality inserts are designed to treat problems such as abnormal motion, plantar fasciitis, and severe forms of heel pain. They can even be used to help patients suffering from diabetes by treating foot ulcers and painful calluses and are usually molded to your feet individually, which allows them to provide full support and comfort.
If you are experiencing minor to severe foot or heel pain, it’s recommended to speak with your podiatrist about the possibilities of using orthotics. A podiatrist can determine which type of orthotic is right for you and allow you to take the first steps towards being pain-free.

Fungal nail infections often form when fungi gets into small cracks on the toenails. These infections cause the nail to turn brown or yellow and become thick and crumbly. The fungi that leads to nail infections often thrive in warm and moist environments such as locker rooms, showers, and pool areas. Because of this, it is important to always wear some form of footwear in these environments. Other common ways to prevent toenail infections include frequently washing the feet, not sharing clippers or nail files, wearing a fresh pair of socks daily, wearing breathable footwear, and not sharing footwear with others. When fungal nail infections are left untreated, they can become painful and foul smelling. Therefore, if you do believe that you may have a fungal nail infection, it is important to consult with a podiatrist for treatment options.

Applying foot powder on the feet and shoes helps keep the feet free of moisture and sweat.
Sandals or open toed shoes – Wearing these will allow air movement and help keep feet dry. They also expose your feet to light, which fungus cannot tolerate. Socks with moisture wicking material also help as well.

Plantar fasciitis occurs when the plantar fascia, the band that runs along the bottom of the foot from the heel to the toes, becomes inflamed. Plantar fasciitis usually causes pain in the heel, which is often worse in the morning, after prolonged standing, or after an intense workout. Usually, the pain that comes from plantar fasciitis gradually worsens over time. Plantar fasciitis is an overuse injury that comes from an activity that puts stress on the plantar fascia, like running, but it can also be caused by other medical conditions, such as flat feet or obesity. Because plantar fasciitis can negatively impact your daily activities, patients who are suffering from heel pain should be under the care of a podiatrist for a proper diagnosis and treatment plan.
Plantar fasciitis can be very painful and inconvenient. If you are experiencing heel pain or symptoms of plantar fasciitis, contact Dr. Kevin F. Gallagher from Gallagher Podiatry. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

The Achilles tendon is a thick band connecting the calf muscle to the heel bone on the back of the ankle. One common injury, Achilles tendonitis, is the result of the tendon becoming inflamed near its connection to the heel bone. This injury is often a result of overuse. Achilles tendinosis occurs when the tendon degenerates, often as a result of not treating Achilles tendonitis. One of the most severe Achilles tendon injuries is a rupture. This occurs when the fibers in the tendon are partially or completely torn. This requires immediate medical attention. Most Achilles tendon injuries result in pain in the calf and heel while moving, and a rupture will produce a sudden sharp pain in the calf and heel. If you are noticing pain or stiffness in the area of your Achilles tendon, please consult with a podiatrist as soon as possible.
Achilles tendon injuries need immediate attention to avoid future complications. If you have any concerns, contact Dr. Kevin F. Gallagher of Gallagher Podiatry. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.
